Example #1: Elena kills Connor. She later tells Connor in her hallucinations that she killed him as a result of being “angry” and because he staked her. She mentions nothing about Damon. You could say she’s in denial, or simply doesn’t realize but this is a point.

Example #2: Damon tells Elena to feed on a random student on campus. Elena goes to do so, but sees that the woman has a little sister and feels bad, so she tells the woman to go away. She explains to a confused Damon that she feels this way because she’s still herself. So even though Damon tells her to, she doesn’t do it.

Example #3: Damon asks Elena as to what she thinks about April’s dress options, and even though Elena agreed to the red dress so suddenly, very soon after Elena tells April she should pick the dress she wants to wear.

Example #4: Damon tells Elena she should call Stefan, and tries to even persuade her, but she doesn’t want to.
